exacqVision and iSCSI Network Storage

exacqVision iSCSI IP ServersiSCSI is a remote network storage solution used by many exacqVision customers.  iSCSI, which is a Storage Area Network (SAN) protocol, allows users to consolidate storage using existing data center storage systems.  iSCSI requires no dedicated cabling; it utilizes existing network cabling and infrastructure, and as such is highly cost effective.

All exacqVision servers - Hybrid, IP and third-party - can write to iSCSI storage units.  Due to the increasing popularity of this storage solution with our customer base, we recently made an addition to our exacqVision server lineup that is specifically designed for use with external iSCSI storage.

The exacqVision iSCSI IP Camera Server comes in our standard 2U rackmount chassis, and is built with redundancy and iSCSI external storage in mind.  Features include:

  • Dual, removable 160GB enterprise-class hard drives in RAID-1 configuration for the OS and VMS application
  • Removable power supply
  • Dual redundant gigabit network cards
  • Windows or Linux OS
  • Up to 64 IP cameras per server
  • Cost-effective system uses local storage for OS and VMS app only, and iSCSI for video storage

Ordering Info - The exacqVision iSCSI IP Server part number is: IPS-iSCSI-R2-RAID
(Windows comes standard, or add ‘-L’ for Linux)

iSCSI Vendors - We have tested exacqVision IP Video Surveillance software with iSCSI storage solutions from a number of vendors, including Pivot3, JetStor, DNF Storage, Intransa, and Nexsan

iSCSI Demo - Our exacqVision storage guru and product manager Robert Ansell put together this brief demo of using iSCSI storage with the new exacqVision iSCSI IP Camera Server:

Pivot3Our thanks to Pivot3 for the use of their High-Definition Storage™ systems used in this video demo.

exacqVision Version 2.9 Released

exacqVision Version 2.9 ReleaseVersion 2.9 of exacqVision IP video surveillance software has been released.  This latest release, compatible with all hybrid and NVR exacqVision systems, continues the quest for rapid, incremental releases to roll out new features and enhancements quickly.

Version 2.9 can be downloaded here.  Key Features in the Version 2.9 Release:

  • Megapixel Camera Cropping - save bandwidth and file size
  • Soft Trigger Event Buttons - Create user-defined event buttons on the client.
  • Linux Release - Now available in Linux or Windows across the entire product line, same feature set on each.
  • 48-Camera View - For wide-screen monitors
  • Right-Click Camera Properties - view/set camera properties with just one click
  • IP Camera Enhancements - expanded functionality with Axis and Panasonic
  • POS/ATM Enhancements - Definable in number of days up to two years

Here are some of these features in detail:

Megapixel Camera Cropping
The IP megapixel cameras from IQeye and Arecont Vision can produce spectacular images with great detail. With those increased-resolution images also comes increased file sizes and increased network bandwidth usage.

In many cases, there are areas in each megapixel camera image that are not necessary to view or record. For example, an exterior camera aimed at a parking lot may also include sky or buildings or landscaping in the view, which you do not need to record. With the new Cropping feature of exacqVision, you can crop out those areas you don’t wish to record, thereby maintaining the high-resolution for the areas you do want to see, but reducing file sizes and network bandwidth usage. This feature is particularly useful for systems that may have a large number of IP megapixel cameras connected.

Roger and Dan put together a video for this feature:

Soft Trigger Event Buttons
This is a feature that allows client buttons to be created that can perform any definable task, created through the exacqVision Event Linking feature. For example, on a client station monitoring a remote location, a soft trigger button can be created that lets the person monitoring that site unlock a door at the remote location to let someone in.  This is a powerful feature.  Roger and Dan put together this video to explain it:

Linux
Exacq at ASIS 2007 8The exacqVision Linux release is now out.  Beginning with Version 2.9, exacqVision software will be available in both Windows and Linux.  The Linux release, based on the Ubuntu 6.06 distribution, is identical in functionality and features to the Windows version.  The two releases are completely compatible: Windows clients can be connected to Linux servers, and Linux clients can be connected to Windows servers; you can have any mix of Windows and Linux clients and servers.

Ordering is easy: any exacqVision Hybrid server or exacqVision NVR server is available in either Windows or Linux; with a ‘-L’ added to the part number for the Linux version.  For software-only purchases to be installed on existing servers, the part numbers are the same; we generate a license key that is the same for either Windows or Linux.

Both the Windows software and the Linux software are now available on our Downloads page.

48-Camera View

exacqVision 48-camera viewA new 8×6 48-camera live view is available on all clients running on wide-screen monitors.  This is especially useful when running one or more large-screen monitors.

Right-Click Camera Properties

exacqVision Camera Properties windowA long-requested exacqVision feature had been added: the ability to see camera properties without having to leave the Live View page.  A right-click in any camera window now has the added feature to show that camera’s properties:

  • system name
  • manufacturer and model number
  • IP address
  • MAC address
  • firmware version
  • Current resolution and frame rate
  • Direct link to camera’s setup page

Among other things, this feature is especially useful if you want to quickly change attributes or text overlay on a given camera.

IP Camera Enhancements
Panasonic
Panasonic: New support for the Panasonic NW-484S i-Pro Super Dynamic III Vandal Proof Network Fixed Dome Camera.  Version 2.9 also improves efficiencies and compatibilities across the Panasonic camera line.

AxisAxis: exacqVision now controls unique PTZ cameras on each input of the Axis multi-input video servers: 240Q, 241Q and 241QA

POS/ATM Enhancements

Improved POS and ATM data retention, now definable in days from 1 to 730 days (2 years).

exacqVision Ver 2.9 Preview: Mpixel Camera Cropping

Continuing the exacqVision Version 2.9 new feature preview: Another of the major new features in Version 2.9 is Megapixel Camera Cropping.

Dan and Roger created a YouTube video for this feature as well:

exacqVision Ver 2.9 Preview: Soft Triggers

Within a week we will be releasing exacqVision Version 2.9, continuing our goal of rapid, incremental updates to add features quickly.  One of the major new features in Version 2.9 is Soft Triggers.  This is a feature that allows client buttons to be created that can perform any definable task, created through the Event Linking page.

For example, on a client station monitoring a remote location, a soft trigger button can be created that lets the person monitoring that site unlock a door at the remote location to let someone in.

The best way to describe this feature is to see it in operation.  Dan and Roger created this brief demo YouTube video:

New exacqReplay Demo Video

exacqReplay menuOne of the more powerful features of exacqVision is exacqReplay, which gives the user the ability to instantaneously play back video from any camera simply by right-clicking in that camera window and selecting the time segment (last 5 seconds, last 30 seconds, etc).  This is a useful feature for both alarm assessment, as well as to quickly review something that just happened.

exacqReplay pops up a video window with a scrub bar that allows you to review the most recent video for the amount of time selected.  This window is resizable from small to full-screen, and can be located on a second monitor if one is available.  From this video window, you can easily export a portion of the video clip for e-mailing or burning to CD/DVD, or you can capture individual images for printing or e-mailing.

Roger and Dan put together a video showing how exacqReplay is used, and here it is:

exacqVision Version 2.8 ReleaseWe have just released Version 2.8 of the exacqVision video surveillance software, for all exacqVision Hybrid and IP NVR systems. This latest release, compatible with all exacqVision systems, continues our quest to issue incremental releases (about every six weeks) in response to customer-requested features and enhancements.

Version 2.8 can be downloaded here.

Key features in the Version 2.8 Release:

  • Multi-Monitor Drag-and-Drop – drag any video camera into any monitor in a multi-monitor client
  • Instant Zoom Box – instantly zoom in on any selected area of the screen on both live and playback
  • New IP Camera Support - support added for Vivotek IP cameras, as well as the new Sentinel Series of external IP cameras from IQinvision

Here are some of these features in detail:

Enhanced Multi-Monitor Mode
Drag-and-Drop videos between monitors

exacqVision Multi-MonitorVersion 2.8 has significant enhancements for running multiple monitors on a client station.  Perhaps the most significant is the ability to drag any video camera - either the video window or the camera name from the camera tree - into any other viewing pane of any other monitor.

Creating video walls, or having specific functions in each monitor: viewing in one, search in another, event monitoring in another, the multi-monitor mode of the exacqVision client is very powerful.

Video Demo - We’ve created a video demonstrating the capabilities of the exacqVision multi-monitor mode, which you can view here:

Instant Zoom Box
Press Control-Z in the exacqVision client, and use the mouse to draw a rectangle around any area of an image for instant zooming to that section of the image.

Enhanced Axis IP Camera Support

Axis CommunicationSecurity - To further strengthen the security of their video products, Axis added support for HTTP Digest Authentication in most of their products. HTTP Digest Authentication is used for more secure authentication over both HTTP and RTSP.  exacqVision Version 2.8 now supports Digest Authentication in Axis cameras.

Enhanced PTZ Presets - Version 2.8 adds more robust PTZ preset modes for the Axis 212, 215 and 233D cameras.

New IP Camera Models Supported

VivotekVivotek - Added support for the entire line of 6000-series and 7000-series Vivotek IP cameras.

exacqVision Digital PTZ demo

exacqVision Digital PTZ DemoRoger and Dan put together another video highlighting the unique features of exacqVision.

In this video, Dan is showing a parking lot surveillance application using only a single 2.0 megapixel IP video camera, and highlighting two powerful features of exacqVision: Views and Digital PTZ.  In a 2×2 live view, the same megapixel camera is used for each window.  And in each window, the Digital PTZ is used to zoom in on specific cars, both in wide views and close-up of license plates.  This is then saved as a View, which saves these defined camera and zoom states.

Using the Search function of exacqVision, you can search within the four video streams of that customized 2×2 view.  Additional digital zooming and panning can be done even in the search playback mode.

It is a powerful demo showing a sophisticated surveillance solution using just a single megapixel camera and exacqVision IP software, all very easy to use.  This video also highlights an enhancement to the Digital PTZ functionality, the Instant Zoom Box, which will be in Version 2.8, due in late September.

Note also the multiple monitor setup.  The exacqVision client can use multiple VGA outputs, allowing independent operations to be performed on each monitor.

exacqVision Version 2.7 Released

exacqVision Version 2.7 ReleaseWe have just released Version 2.7 of the exacqVision IP video surveillance software. This latest release, compatible with all exacqVision systems, continues our quest to issue incremental releases (about every six weeks) in response to customer-requested features and enhancements.

Version 2.7 can be downloaded here.

Key features in the Version 2.7 Release:

  • Virtual Matrix Switching & Event Monitoring – a powerful new feature for alarm monitoring and assessment
  • Increased Data Authentication – secure, accurate and defendable video authentication
  • Panoramic IP camera support - support for panoramic cameras from Arecont Vision and CBC America
  • Playback Enhancements - more FF/RW control
  • ePlayer enhancements - substantial feature enhancements to ePlayer, the player that is automatically included with video exports
  • Enhanced audio support

Here are some of these features in detail:

Virtual Matrix Switching & Event Monitoring
Version 2.7 adds full virtual matrix switching functionality, plus event monitoring and acknowledgement to exacqVision. Whether you’re running exacqVision in a single-monitor mode or in a multiple-monitor mode, the new feature enables video pop-up alarms, immediate playback and assessment, and acknowledgement of alarms.  This is a powerful new feature, and is best explained in the video clip we posted a couple of weeks ago:

Increased Watermark Authentication
exacqVision Data AuthenticationVersion 2.7 adds a substantially increased secure level of watermark authentication on exported video using the industry standard, NIST-approved Hash Message Authentication Code, or HMAC.  For any export of video, regardless of the number of cameras, types of cameras (analog or IP), or length of export, the entire export is authenticated with HMAC.

This is a highly secure, accurate and defendable means of verifying the authenticity of any frame of any camera in the video export.  The authentication would not pass if any frame of any camera had been modified, deleted or added.

New Panoramic IP Camera Support

Arecont Vision - Added support for the Arecont panoramic cameras, models AV8180 and AV8360.

CBC America - Added support for the CBC America MP8D panoramic camera

The complete list of exacqVision supported IP cameras is available here

Playback Enhancements
exacqVision FF/RW enhancementsPlayback of video is now enhanced through unlimited acceleration forward of backward by pressing the FF or RW button. Go from 1x to 2x to 4x to 8x to 16x and on and on.

ePlayer enhancements
exacqVision ePlayer Substantial improvements have been made to ePlayer, the program that accompanies exported video.  ePlayer is included with all video exports and allows the viewer to play back exported video in the same way it was recorded without needing the exacqVision client or system.

ePlayer allows for simultaneous camera playback, just as it was recorded, and allows the viewer to perform additional searches and exports, as well as save and print individual frames, and more.  Numerous enhancements have enabled ePlayer to have most all of the functionality of the exacqVision client, including:

  • Digital PTZ - zoom in and pan around any video frame while the video is playing
  • Status information - new options to enable display of camera names, time stamps, alarm mode, and more.
  • Enhanced FF/RW - clicking on Fast Forward and Rewind buttons now allows unlimited speeds forward and backward, just like the new feature in the exacqVision client.
  • HMAC Authentication - ePlayer allows the viewer to quickly verify that the video is authentic using the enhanced HMAC authentication added to exacqVision.

Numerous Enhancements
A long list of enhancements accompany the 2.7 release, including:

  • improved audio playback support for Axis and ACTi IP cameras, as well as exacqVision Pro Hybrid audio inputs
  • enhanced Arecont Vision IP camera performance
  • various bug fixes

As always, the latest versions of exacqVision client and server software can easily and quickly be copied over existing versions while retaining all user settings.  Version 2.7 of exacqVision is available on our Downloads page.
