We are pleased to announce that Chan Nopporn has joined Exacq Technologies as Senior Software Engineer.
We’ve known Chan for a long time, and we’re thrilled to be working with him again. Chan worked with us back when we were all with Truevision, where he wrote test software and device drivers for the now-legendary TARGA, ATVista and NuVista video boards. He subsequently joined us after we started Integral Technologies where, among other things, he worked on tape and disk archive utilities for the DigitalSENTRY product line and more recently was the principal architect of the client software and video SDK for the Integral (now Pelco) Intelli-M IP access control product line.
We’re glad he’s now with us here. We have many things in development at Exacq, and Chan will be focusing on new IP camera integration for our exacqVision product line in the short term.
The installation of IQinVision megapixel cameras at a jewelry store in Pennsylvania by Access Security Corp., an integrator based in Warminster, PA, was more successful. In a recent incident, a man allegedly stole a $47,000 engagement ring from the jewelry store. The man, who spent more than two hours in the store, was able to palm an engagement ring while the salesperson was busy putting away multiple rings he had already viewed.
A few months prior to the incident, Access Security had upgraded the jewelry store’s standard resolution camera system with IQeye megapixel cameras and an Exacq Technologies DVR.
The upgraded surveillance system caught the entire crime on video. That evening, Access Security was called to help retrieve the video. After positively identifying the man stealing the ring, Access Security exported the video to a CD for the police department and created a still photo for the local newspapers. After the picture appeared in the local papers, it took only two days for the police to apprehend the suspect. The owner of the jewelry store was impressed. “With our old CCTV system, we would not have been able to catch this guy and our ring would be gone,” the store owner said.
The chief deputy district attorney was quoted saying the video was “critical” to the arrest.
The customer enthusiastically shared the video clip with IQeye and us, and the pictures tell the whole story. The image detail and clarity from the IQeye 703 megapixel camera is simply astonishing. The video clip of the incident was exported from the exacqVision NVR system. The exacqVision player allows anyone to then view the exported video, step frame by frame forward and backward, digitally zoom and pan around the video, save off specific images as JPEG files, save off clip segments as AVI files, and so forth.
Here is a scaled-down image of the full camera view (click to view the full original 2048×1536 image):
Using the exacqVision Player, we used the digital zoom to look at six successive frames where the actual theft occurs. In this first frame the alleged thief is looking at the ring; the clerk is distracted throughout.
In the next frame he is getting ready to palm the ring in his left hand.
The next frame shows the ring actually being palmed in his left hand:
The next frame shows him getting ready to grab another ring to look at:
And the next frame, with the three smaller fingers in his left hand concealing the palmed ring:
And the next frame. When the clerk finally looks back up, he appeared to be still holding the original ring, and the clerk was not aware one was missing.
A low-res version of the video clip is here. The frames above occur at 1:54 in:
Our thanks to both IQeye and Access Security Corp for this successful exacqVision NVR installation. They can be reached as follows:
We are very proud to announce that Exacq Technologies has been chosen as one of 50 Indiana Companies to Watch.

Version 3.1 of exacqVision has just been released. This latest release, compatible with all exacqVision Hybrid and IP video surveillance systems, incorporates new features and enhancements, and continues our quest for rapid, incremental updates.
Version 3.1 is available for download here. Key features in the 3.1 Release:
Definable User Permissions & Privileges - Create custom classes of users, each with unique privilege and permission levels
Multi-Camera Search Enhancements - Search and playback any number of cameras easily & simultaneously without having to define a view first.
Arecont 8180 & 8360 Motion Detection - Motion detection now available on Arecont Panoramic cameras
Enhanced Audio Export - Export audio along with video to AVI files
POS Display Enhancements - Display ATM & POS data in real-time on playback
Ubuntu 8.04 Linux Support - Added support for latest Ubuntu Linux distribution
Here are some of the features in detail:
Definable User Permissions & Privileges We’ve added the often-requested ability to define custom user classes, defining each user class with incremental permissions and privileges. This is a significant expansion of user privilege definition over our previous default user classes of Power User, User, Restricted User, etc.
In 3.1, the administrator can now create any number of user classes, each with its own specific permissions and privileges for things such as live viewing capabilities, searching capabilities, saving images, exporting video, smart search, etc. Below are screen shots of the new Users screen, showing the addition of the Custom User Permission and Custom User Privilege sections.
Enhanced Multi-Camera Search Multi-camera search and viewing has been made even easier. In 3.1, any combination of cameras can be selected for search and playback, and the client will automatically bring up a view to accommodate all of the selected cameras. It is not necessary to define a view first. Our software engineer Jim Bauerle gives a brief demonstration of this capability in this YouTube video clip:
Arecont Vision 8180 & 8360 Motion Detection Arecont Vision has recently updated the firmware for their AV8180 and AV8360 panoramic cameras. This new firmware revision now fully supports motion detection at the camera, and exacqVision 3.1 supports this new firmware and motion detection capability.
To utilize motion detection on the 8180 and 8360 the cameras must be running Arecont firmware version 64118 or newer. This firmware is available directly from Arecont Vision or you can request it from Exacq Support.
Enhanced Audio Export Audio export has been enhanced to allow both G.711 and ADPCM compressed audio to be exported to AVI files along with the video. ADPCM (Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation) is the audio format used on the analog inputs of our eDVR video compression boards in the Hybrid Servers, and G.711 is the audio format used by Axis in their IP cameras with integrated audio audio.
POS/ATM Display Enhancements New in 3.1 is the ability to display POS and ATM data in real-time along with video playback, and have it scroll through the transactions along with the video.
New vertical scrollbars allow for both fast scrubbing through the POS/ATM tape display with the video playback advancing or reversing right in sync, or the normal horizontal bar that allows for the fast scrubbing through the playback video, with the POS/ATM data tape scrolling up or down right in sync.
Ubuntu 8.04 Linux Support We’ve added support for the latest 8.04 distribution of Ubuntu. This newer distribution adds support for the latest motherboards and processors. exacqVision now supports both 6.06 and 8.04 releases, which are the two Ubuntu LTS (Long Term Support) releases.
IP Camera Updates Various functionality enhancements have been added to several models of the supported IP cameras, including models from Axis, ACTi, Panasonic, Sony and Vivotek. Details are in the release notes.
Recent Releases We’ve been making rapid progress with exacqVision, with incremental releases hitting about every 2 months. You can see the details of the past year’s releases here.
As always, the latest versions of exacqVision client and server software can easily and quickly be copied over existing versions while retaining all user settings. The latest versions can always be downloaded from our Downloads page, or you can click on ‘Check for Updates‘ within the ‘About‘ box in the exacqVision software.
exacqVision Server software is available in both Windows and Linux versions, and the exacqVision client software is available in Windows, Linux and Macintosh native versions. Any version of exacqVision client can connect to any version of exacqVision server.
