Leaving A Legacy: Embracing IP Video Surveillance

Exacq in Security Products magazineOur own Dave Underwood penned an article in this month’s Security Products magazine.  Entitled Leaving A Legacy: Industry Ready To Embrace IP Surveillance Technologies, the article asks the key question:

Recent independent studies have indicated that the long-term cost of an IP system is actually lower than an analog-based DVR system. The big question for security integrators is, “What’s keeping you from upgrading your customers to IP surveillance?”

Three key considerations are discussed when contemplating making the switch from analog DVRs to IP video:

  • Price - In the long run, IP video systems can cost less, but customers may not initially see it that way.
  • Familiarity and Learning Curve - Customers are concerned about the time investment required to learn a new technology.
  • Legacy installation - Many customers wish to leverage existing investment in analog surveillance while looking to future growth with IP.

The answer to all of these questions is a hybrid NVR solution.  A hybrid system can input video from the existing analog cameras, preserving that investment. Additionally, the analog portion closely resembles the DVR systems they are familiar with.  The hybrid NVR also allows the addition of IP cameras to the system, with little, if any, difference in how utilize and manage the video from both analog and IP cameras.

The article provides a great introduction to those resellers and end users considering the move from analog to IP video surveillance.  The full article is available here.

In the CUSTOS booth at New Security Belgium

Exacq at New Security BelgiumThe annual New Security trade show, held at the De Montil in Affligem, Belgium, ended today.  Our Belgian distributor, Custos, had a booth where they were showing the exacqVision NVR video surveillance product line, along with megapixel cameras from Arecont Vision and IP transmission devices from Veracity.

Luc de Cock, Managing Director of Custos, told us, “Your software was well received at the show.  In the “exacqVision corner” of the booth we had an exacqVision Hybrid server on the left, an exacqVision IP NVR server on the right,  and laptop running the exacqVision Client in between.  The Hybrid NVR generated a great deal of interest.”

Our thanks to Luc for doing such a great job in promoting and supporting our products in Belgium.  Custos can be reached as follows:

At the BICSI 2008 Winter Conference

Exacq at BICSI 2008 Winter ConferenceOnce again we were exhibiting our exacqVision NVR product line at the BICSI Winter Conference, held in January in Orlando.  This is the flagship North American event for BICSI’s 24,000 ITS designers, installers and integrators, combining training, RCDD certification, seminars, and a large expo floor.

We were part of the IPVS Magazine booth, along with Axis and Infinova.  We’ve had a good association with BICSI.  A common theme from BICSI members has been the rise in requests for IP video surveillance, and that side is increasingly being spec’d and installed by the BICSI designers and installers: the same people who spec and install the network and communications infrastructure.  Our exacqVision Hybrid systems solution has been particularly popular in this area, as it allows for the leveraging of existing, legacy surveillance equipment with new and future purchases of IP video capability.

Our thanks again to Eric Moe of IPVS Magazine for another very well run booth.  Our previous blog posts on BICSI can be found here.  A listing of upcoming events where we will be exhibiting is here.
